I teach quantitative methods, data analysis, and program evaluation to students preparing for careers in public policy, education research, administration, and related fields. My courses aim to help researchers and practitioners pose policy-relevant questions that help address social problems.

Quasi-Experimental Data Analysis

Prepares students to apply causal analytic approaches to questions in education and public policy. The course covers randomized controlled trials, statistical power, regression, clustering and fixed effects, matching, sharp and fuzzy regression discontinuity, instrumental variables, difference-in-differences, and event study models. Each method is examined alongside related empirical papers, so that students can evaluate their strengths and limitations in applied settings. We meet in a seminar format built around mini-lectures, close readings, discussion, and live coding. Coursework includes problem sets, reaction essays, a discussant report on a recent working paper, and a full research conference proposal with preliminary results, presented to the class. Prerequisites include prior coursework in regression analysis and research design, plus experience with code-based statistical software.

Applied Quantitative Methods for Educational Practitioners

Introduces education practitioners to foundational statistical and evaluation techniques in the social sciences, as well as how to effectively consume, critique, and develop empirical research that is relevant to their fields. Students will identify and explain core topics in applied quantitative analysis in the social sciences, select and apply appropriate statistical tests to existing data, and consume scholarly quantitative research and interpret results presented in that research. Ultimately, enrollees will use the course to make progress towards a deeper understanding of education statistics and apply new knowledge to their theses or dissertations.
